Well, Don's car (as you can see from his sig) is a hell of a lot nicer than mine. For another data point, I bought my '75 S targa for $3k. I've put another couple of thousand into it. Big expenses were Fuchs and the new seats I've just purchased. Other things include carpet, rebuilding the shift linkage, some other minor repairs and upgrades like turbo valve covers. The car has some rust. I've yet to get up the courage to tackle that. It will need paint. Almost all of the parts and upgrades I've purchased used from the classifieds here. One other data point: the car came with a 2.2 engine as the original 2.7 most likely needed a lot of expensive work (search the forums in this regard).

Oh, and I got lucky, the car came with a factory hard top, which I've seen advertised here for upwards of $1.5k. Thus I've got around $5k into the car and could part it out for that much. From here on out, it's a slippery slope into a zone where I won't recoup the investment in dollars. However, the driving pleasure I get out of this machine is unlike any other behind the wheel experience I've had. I think that's the hook with these cars, it's a very raw feeling, and quite addictive. If you have the cash, Speedo is selling a pretty nice Targa in the classifieds. He's an expert and the car will be well sorted. You may want to consider that one. Good luck.
