The point about the galvanizing is important - if you're looking at a pre-77 then pay particular to the rockers, underpan, etc. Definitely if you go with a '74 or earlier. Rust never sleeps and you absolutely must check everything.
I personally like the mid-years a lot, although they do have a couple of serious problems (which have been described above). The simplicity is a big plus - no stupid electronics to deal with or to break, nothing overly complicated. Very raw and viceral, and without the insane price tag of the early cars (and their parts). They have also bottomed out and are beginning to re-appreciate in their own right. Good specimens and well-restored specimens will follow in the footsteps of the early 911s in the years to come - of this I have little doubt.
Then again, I bought my car to restore, enjoy and drive and could care less what some book says it's worth. I'm not planning on selling it and I get a stated value insurance policy, so I don't particularly care.

Pre 76 you mean.. 76 was galvanized.
For $300 I replaced my reactors with early heat exchangers.. my fan blade upgrade was already done and Im willing to be I have case savers.. most of these cars have been "fixed"..
My opinion... 2.7l cars are a overlooked gem... I love my 76.. best $6k I ever spent.. when you see a 2.7l with 150k plus on it you can bet its been fixed.. just pull the valve covers at your PPI and make sure no head studs are loose.
Once I did my early exchangers it really woke up the motor too.. Im not saying its a screaming 3.2l but it aint bad.
In regards to that ebay auction.. 75 that sold for 11k... LMFAO.. anyone who buys off of flea bay gets what he deserves. Sure.. if the winner bidder can get a PPI all is good.. but I doubt it..
I think most people fool thereselves into thinking they are getting a "deal".. they are getting the shaft.. been there done that.. bought a BMW with a rusted out firewall.. never again.
