The fan housing may be cracked ...

So, after you take the fan belt off to test alternator bearings ... loosen the band clamp around the fan housing, too, and see if the release of tension on the housing alters the clearance problem! Cracks can be TIG welded to repair, just be sure the welder is aware that it is Magnesium!
