You are totally correct. Its a terrible place, only criminals and snakes/scorpions here, so STAY AWAY.
Was just out this morning putzing with the pool and solar system and noticed that a black widow spider decided to build a nest out back. Damm, cannot believe that I let her live... must be slipping on the "kill everything in sight, let God sort it out!" meter.
