There is a seal on the transmission hump, when your motor mounts collapse (as they all do) the seal is not held tight and this allows hot air from the engine/exhaust to flow up into the car. Its worse if you open the sunroof because of the draft it creates. One solution is replacing the mounts, or using a JagerMount setup (thick slab of rubber between the engine oil pan and the crossmember.
