There are many previous posts with pictures as to how to remove old pads and put new ones on. Now if you are putting pads on for the first time, the surface must be clean.
I don't know what year hoods came w/o pads but the early cars did have them. Many pros and cons on this board as to their usefulness. I have an 83 and I like the appearance of the pads. I replaced mine as the old ones crumble over time.
