Does the 009 only fit type IV engines? If it fits in type I it may have a #3 cylinder retard. A VW solution to the Type-I #3 over heating problem. This retard would not cause a ping but mabye a stunble that is felt as a ping. I don't think the 32/36 is such a bad carb, espeicially for street driving. It is a 2 bbl. progressive, so if it is tuned right it gives better trasition and fuel economy. It is also used as a conversion for the ford capri/Pinto with 2.3+ motors. However for performance get a duel carb setup preferably from someone who can jet it to your cam, motor, and altitude, as jeting these carbs from scratch means you need an assortment of jets. It is worth it to pay more for a properly turned carb with a high quallity linkage. Rather then to go through the aggravation of rejetting the carb over the period of a month and running around looking for spherical ball ends and bending rods so that the linkage dosen't stick. Another thing if the ping dosen't go away with the timing set to 36-35 degrees, then maybe try putting points back on, and I don't know if this will apply to VW, but Ford put out a T.S.P. about 5.0L engines pinging because the spark signal was jumping between spark plug wires that were too close to each other.
