Help me help my friend (warning RT content)

Sorry for posting RT Q's here but this is the only Oilhead forum I frequent.

My friend got the beemer bug from me and picked up a low mileage 2001 RT (22k) 2 weeks ago. I helped him do a valve adjustment, spark plug replacement, and TB Sync (air cleaner is almost new). The bike runs smooth and is in great shape but has 2 issues.

1. The bike will accelerate well from a stop but when running over 50mph in 4th or 5th gear hard roll-on's result in a long hesitation. It's almost like giving it too much fuel at speed is not something it wants to respond to. Is this the "flat spot" I hear so much talk about? Some have sugested installing the GS air tubes but I just want to know if this is typical of the R1100RT.

2. Cold idle is very rough, without fast idle (choke) set it will die. The idle speed is running below 1,000rpm's. Is this something we can move up? 1150 or so might be a little better.

Other than a Potentiometer, the bike is stock. So far he love's his bike and I want to help him make it as good as it can be.

thx,
Mike.
