Seems the feet on the pegs is a good rule to go by. I remember as a kid when my Dad had a sissy bar on his bikes it made a HUGE difference for me. It kept me from sliding off the back of the bike when I wasn't paying attention to the traffic lights. It's difficult to see in front of you when you have tall shoulders in your face.
