Re: the alternator - there's a 3-pin white nylon plug at the back of the cam cover, on the firewall; I had a regular problem with bad contacts in this keeping the alternator from charging on my old car.

Check/clean your grounds too.

Often the clutch pedal pivot needs greasing too; fix this (whatever the problem turns to be) soon, before you tear the sheetmetal of the firewall!!! Very expensive to have someone stitch it back up!!
