Jeff it sounds like you ansered your own question. I'm not too sure yours is the same but here is my.02 worth hope it helps. If you don't want to do it again as I have, then replace the gides. However I have the newer gides in my 82SC the only thing I had to do was to spread the channel where the shoe slides in, apart a bit. The reccomendation at that time was to install new gides. They are updated ones, also mine are stainless steel and did not show a lot of wear, so I reused them. My right cable pulled free from the shoe so I pinched it back togeather then a month later it gave up alltogeather. The new cable is slightly larger in diameter because of the pipe cleaner type wraped cable. I installed it and it works fine, a later post I read said to remove the felt that wraps the cable, but I'm not going to do that unless there is a problem. Granted it was a snug fit but like I said no problem.
Good luck to you and take your time so as not to scratch the roof top use masking tape to protect the paint.
