I've recently restored two 912's a 1966 and a 1967 - BOTH had red lines going to ground, black was positive.
Maybe, just maybe, this is "normal" for cars of that vintage.
Regardless, look at where your cables run - if red goes to the frame or metal, it's the ground. If the black goes to additional wires, it's positive.
