Man dies after accidentally shooting himself at Hilton Head pawn shop, authorities say

A 63-year-old man died today after he apparently accidentally shot himself outside a Hilton Head Island pawn shop, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
William G. Brannon of Hilton Head Island was pronounced dead this afternoon at Hilton Head Hospital, according to county Deputy Coroner David Ott. An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina, he said.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim at about 11:21 a.m. at Top Dollar Pawn, 11 Mathews Drive, Ott said.
A man had come into the pawn shop and told employees he wanted to pawn a gun, said Sgt. Robin McIntosh, Sheriff’s Office spokesman. He said he would go to his car to retrieve the gun.
Soon after, employees heard a gunshot and the man yell, McIntosh said. They ran to the parking lot to find him lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest, she said.
They called 911. Brannon died at 1:25 p.m. at Hilton Head Hospital, Ott said.
McIntosh said it appears he might have accidentally shot himself when trying to unload the weapon, a 9-mm semiautomatic handgun.
The investigation continues, she said.
