The Ongoing Saga

Hope you guys can help me with some good advice. My son has a '74 914 1.8 with Fuel Injection which I have asked about before. It stopped running on him on the highway. I went out and found the wire from the coil to the distributor had a broken connector. After fooling around it started but only ran a short time. I replaced the cable and it started but only ran briefly. Had it towed to the generic import garage. They said vacuum was good and replaced points and condensor, set dwell and so on. It starts but runs only briefly and then dies. He says the points open and close. Mechanic thinks it needs a new distributor due to a bad centrifugal advance or bad cam drive. A used 1 will cost more than an electronic ignition conversion. We're not purists, just want it to run and we have very little mechanical talent, hence taking it to the garage. Will the electronic ignition fix this and make it drivable? Thoughts? Thanks for your help you guys are the greatest!
Dave
