If I start the car in neutral and ease out the clutch the rear wheels start turning forward. Step on the brake and the engine quits. Again any gear slected and easing out the clutch causes the engine to quit.

Is this a 4 or 5-speed in your 72T? Original to your car? Has the transmission been opened in the past few years? Any additional info on the trans???
If you're getting good linkage movement into the trans, and can't find neutral, then you have an internal transmission problem. You say the car will move foward in neutral, but stall in any gear selected. Is there 1 gear in which it won't stall, or 1 gear you cannot select? Some possibilities: the guide fork has come loose, a synchro has blown and jammed a gear, something has broken and seized a gear, or you have an interlock issue.
