Don't have involuntary manslaughter in Canada so not my specialty but:
Involuntary Manslaughter in the US requires three things:
The defendant must do an illegal act (possession or trafficking in cocaine) - even in Canada trafficking includes giving drugs to someone - they do not need to be sold
The act must be dangerous (convince someone to eat an ounce of cocaine to protect your butt - probably the weakest point of their case but sounds dangerous)
The act must cause the death of the victim
Probably easier to wrap one's head around it, if the victim is a 14 year old girl and the dealer convinces her to take drugs for the first time and she overdoses and dies - certainly partially responsible for the death. No intent to kill, so not murder, rather he commits an act by trafficking the drugs that result in the person's death.
In Canada, manslaughter and murder differ by the intent to kill in murder.
