I had a 2007 GTI (which is VERY similar to the car you bought). I also have an '86 911 coupe. IMHO, there is NO comparison. The 911 is a FAR better drivers car. I autocrossed the GTI once, and it really doesn't handle all that well (for a front driver it does! not compared to the 911).
Even for a daily driver, I would not give up the 911 for a GTI. I'd rather put money in to the 911 to keep it up and make it more comfortable (like a new stereo).
Congrats and to each their own! I certainly won't be telling my 911 this story!
