We beat the heck out of our first one for a long time. The reason that we ultimately had to replace it was because a clueless housekeeper tried to pry the canister out of it and broke it in the process.

We bought a canister model and it's been great.

We've got dogs, and these things clean like crazy.

The only functionality problems that we had were due to hair getting places and needing to be cleaned out which I don't think I can blame on the vacuum. One other issue was from the filter getting clogged by that powder that you can sprinkle on the floor before you vacuum. Cleaned the washable filter and was back in business.

The new one works even better than the old one did which is pretty impressive.
