There are many systems and methods for exhaust gas analysis. Unfortunately, they're often misapplied, resulting in measurement problems. Narrow-band O2 sensors are a good example, great for lambda control, not so great as a method for measuring A/F ratio over a range of interest to tuners. The dual thermistor sensor (not thermocouple) used in the Heathkit also has a number of secondary interferences that limit its accuracy (I know, I have one, too).

If you want accurate two-gas sensing for a reasonable price, go onto Ebay and buy an IR dispersive analyzer. I've seen them for $200, they measure HC and CO in a fairly wide range with decent accuracy. If you want more, you're talking about a pro instrument, get ready to pay fairly large $$ for a good tool. If money were no object, I'd love to have one of those PDA-sized 5 gas units.
