There are many possible causes for the airbag light. Belt buckles are one. Grounding wires are another. There is a TSB available
here.
My '01 went through 4 trips to the dealer over its 10 years, 2 belt buckles and 2 grounding wires. None of those trips cost anywhere near $1k.
