More cylinders, better?

Pre-89 911 has almost the same engine design as my '81 BMW R100 motorcycle. Under heavy acceleration, 911's six cylinders are much louder and vibrates more than the BMW's two cylinders. The two-cyclinder BMW just feels silky smooth.

I have driven Mercedes SL600, V12. The V12 just seems like it's much quieter and smoother than the V8. More cylinders but smoother, what's the reason behind this?
