There's a good reason for this. When you were very young...say 10 years old...one year represented a full 10% of your total lifetime. Summer vacations from school seemed to last forever...a whole year was an unimaginably long time. Now, when in your 50s, a year is only 1/50 of your lifetime...a much smaller, more easily-imagined slice.
When you were 10, getting your driver's license seemed so far off that it was almost impossible to imagine it
ever happening. Now, thinking in terms of 5-year chunks of time isn't that hard at all. Events that happened a year ago can seem like just last month! As we get older, our perception of time constantly changes. This can be a good thing though...like when looking forward to retiring, or waiting on the birth of a grandchild.
