Before going any further I would suggest checking the shift rod coupler (under panel, on top of tunnel, behind front seats); the plastic bushings in this coupler can disintegrate with age and cause problems. New bushings can be obtained from our host and installed. Coupler can be readily removed from tunnel to effect the new bushings installation on a bench top. The engine and transmission must be removed to pull the horizontal shift rod rearward out of the tunnel. There are plastic fuel lines in the tunnel so take care with any welding. Good luck.
