The moving of a fluid creates a static charge. Light hydrocarbons tend to be more efficient at creating that charge.

Pouring gasoline into or out of a plastic can WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF GROUNDING DEVICE TO CARRY THE CHARGE AWAY can result in a spark which can ignite the vapors.

That's why you are not suppose to fill any can with gas in the back of a pick-up if you have a bed liner.

The safest way to handle gasoline containers is to have a reasonably long wire with large aligator clips on both ends. Clip one end to the can, the other to a ground, and pour away knowing you will not burst into flames.

A couple bux at the local ace hardware could save your life.
