If it turns out to need a rebuild after i get the rest of the car done, I'll just yank it back out next winter and do it. I think my car will come in under 2100 lbs, so the 2.4T should be fun enough and maybe too much for the 901 box.

My only objective at this time is to clean it up, maybe replace the main seal and the return tubes. I have a Eastwood soda blaster, so I might seal it up and blast it.

Here's my question: the air deflecter tin between the cylinders looks rough. Looks like at least some of it won't come off without taking the chain covers off. Is this a correct assumption? Is there a workaround? I have Wayne's book, and it looks like a fairly big job to remove the chain housings.
if you want to take the chain housings off, you will need a few tools (z bar, dial indicator, crows foot and that cam socket)

the cams have to come out and you have to learn how to do the cam timing but its not so bad if you're patient and have the right tools
