Ancestry.com was what my brother liked a lot. It is a pay site.
Family search is free and by the Mormons. You have to give some personal information to join the site but the last time I checked it was free.
Hope this helps. It is great that you are getting in to this but just be forewarned, genealogy can get addictive.
