Engine Whine
Hello!
Recently my 1978 SC 3.0 has been making a terrible whining noise. It isn't the typical whine heard when the throttle opens, it is apparant at idle. I'm suspecting perhaps the alternator. It sounds like I have a supercharger.
I have good oil pressure and all, and the engine seems to run very well with no knocking sounds, power problems, or overheating.
Would it be ok from dead cold to start the engine without the fan/alternator belt for just 5 seconds to see if the sound is absent? I know the 911 basically needs that fan or else the engine will literally die; however, if dead cold tomorrow morning (5C or less) can I run it without the belt for a few seconds or will that result in damage?
thanks in advance.
-Tom
