A new set of rings is OK, but check the end gap is within spec at different points within the cylinder (this will almost certainly be OK, as you note the cylinders often look new.) The more important check is the ring grooves in the pistons, slide the rings into the pistons and check the wear. The top and second ring are the most likely to be worn. No point re-ringing an engine with worn piston grooves, they will wear rapidly. If both these measures are within spec you are good to go. I did a light flexi hone on my barrels for the new rings, bedded quickly and been great ever since.
