I would try cleaning them first, after all, they are only original once. Not sure if the thick carpet was an option on 3.0 litre cars, my car has it and it doesn't show up on the COA, so I would believe that the shag carpeting was standard on our cars.
Good luck and if you try to steam clean them, please post the results.
