old_skul is exactly right. There is plenty of air available through stock air cleaner assemblies. I think Bruce Anderson once noted that they did back to back dyno tests on an SC engine (I believe). One with the factory air cleaner/cover/etc. and one with all of that removed. No change in power output at all.
I even heard a story (from the guy who did it) of running a dyno test on a Pontiac Firebird and - just for the heck of it, they decided to add duct tape to the air cleaner (a big K&N) and re-run the dyno tests until they saw a decrease in power output. They had to add tape until there was only a 4" x 4" square opening remaining....
