I've got a 2000 740iL. It has about 90k on it but runs great and we love it. That being said, parts are expensive and there are lots of bells and whistles to go bad. The technology was state of the art, when it was built but it is old now. The built in GPS isn't that great and the CD changer is in the trunk. I don't think I would recommend my car to someone on a budget.
Best advice is probably what we tell olks looking for their first 911..... Buy the best you can afford.
