Hi all -
Vehicle: '75 2.0
Task: Adjustment of the side-shift linkage.

I tried the Haynes method of loosening the coupler nut with the shift stick all the way to the right and then rotating the shift rod cw to stop - but this did not do it - still could not get into some gears, etc.

So now I am trying to do the adjustment as per Dave's article where the tranny is in reverse to begin with and then with the shift coupler nut loose the inside shift rod is inserted into the coupler by moving the shift stick down into 1st - but I can not get it into reverse using the inside shift lever no matter how hard I try so I want to know how to put it into reverse using the pivot rod at the transmission to get to the initial starting position. Back? Forward? Up? Down?

When making the adjustment should the shift rod conical set screws be tightened down hard? I don't understand why the receiving holes (in the fore and aft shafts) are not also conical in shape and if these are tightened down very hard they are going to dig into the receiving holes which I guess would "center" them for proper alignment? When I tighten down the set screws hard there are still threads showing - they do not screw in until flush - I am just wondering if this is correct?
