Here's our take on making them work super efficiently, eliminating boost creep and enhancing spool:
make them true twin scroll with a fully divided flange, twin 'gates, twin scroll turbine housing (this one features Garrett's new niresist-alloy housing).
Plus really good heat exchangers.
A little overkill for what you've describing wanting, but maybe useful info for others.
Concerning upgrading your engine in steps like that -- not a problem. All gains from increased efficiency, no jump in boost.
And no matter what turbocharger you choose, nearly any other unit is an improvement of the obsolete 3LDZ turbo! :-)
