It depends on how you measure productivity.
If it's simply how busy you are, then you're a worker bee. Nothing wrong with that, the world runs on worker bees.
But the higher you go up in a corporation the less it depends on being busy as it does in producing results.
I've known people who were so busy they didn't notice their business was failing until it was too late. They couldn't find the time to step back, take a deep breath and study the big picture because they were simply too busy. People like that, althuogh very hard working, are bad for a company.
There are times when a member of the leadership team spends hours or days contemplating a problem and how to resolve it.
The decision could save the company hundreds of thousands, or cost it twice that much if they make a bonehead call. The ultimate solution may be influenced by several hours of web surfing, which could be called investigating.
Maybe they have a presentation to make to the corporate leadership team and are running scenarios through their head for half a day. To the outside it would appear as daydreaming.
Maybe they have 4 or 5 of those types of decisions pending and are jugling them.
Some of them may be nothing more than problem solvers and due to their extensive knowledge and experience are simply there just in case something goes wrong, they'll know how to handle it quickly before it gets out of hand and costs millions.
maybe they'll only really do a few things a week, but those things are huge in impact.
They may be sitting there on monday morning thinking "I only have to do 3 or 4 things this week, but any one of them could cost me my career if I blow it or get me an extra 5 figures on a bonus if I get it right.
Are they busy during that time? Hardly. Are they working? It may not look like it even though their average work day is 13 hours long.
Lets just say that sometimes they long for the good old days when life was easy and all they had to do was stay busy.
Or maybe they're just so good they can spend a half hour a day screwing off and get away with it.
