Yes, they use the license plate marker lights. If you remove it and move the license plate back to where it belongs, you'll re-use those lights to light up the plate.
Unfortunately, they also added lights to the bumper. So you'd be into a bunch of work to put it back to OEM.
Those were all dealer add-ons, not factory pieces, but certainly period correct.
