Instead, Gacook was stating that GoT uses violence and gore to depict the middle-ages, which was real, and is roughly the context in which GoT takes place, i.e. knights, castles, horses, swords, wizards (although fictitious), etc...

I agree with Gacook that the middle-ages was a trying time for humanity, and the violence and gore helps to make its depiction, and thus GoT, realistic for viewers.
