The answer is that a competent driver probably would not have had difficulty dealing with the situation, but that assumes JQ Public knows what he/she is doing, which is usually not the case.

Alcohol - and lots of it, make the loss of power brakes and steering quite deadly at speed. Pretty sure a lot of these deaths are young people coming home late at night with a lot of drinks.
It fits the profile of the owners of this type of car that I have met. Might also stretch to driving under influence of drugs.
Of course, losing your kid from them being drunk is a harsh thing to accept, so find some other blame.
IF the lock on the ignition triggered, that is another matter. When I get in a vehicle, seeing what its like without the motor running is something I like to do.
