I had a similar problem with my '84. The cover on the rear of the cam cover has a gasket and is secured by 3 bolts. The lowest bolt was stripped out (don't know why) and had backed off to the point that the bolt had almost fallen out. Oil leaked profusely down the rear of the motor and onto the exhaust pipe which caused a lot of smoke. Fortunately, my mechanic, Tony at Accutrack Engineering in Manhattan Beach CA, was able to tap a new hole and replaced the old gasket without having to remove the cam cover. Saved me big bucks, about $400.00 vs. the $73 I ended up paying.
