Mine were all torn up too, but I couldn't tell if it was the bushing that was messed up or just that exterior piece.
This bushing controls the Weissach effect. Basically, the spring plate bushing is softer than the outboard bushing, so under braking, the rear toes-in for stability.
Worn spring plates can cause bad handling since the active geometry is poorly controlled.
An alternative to replacing the whole spring plate, Elephant Racing sells the bushing piece only to service your old spring plates and there's also the ERP 935-style spring plate that uses a monoball and locks out the Weissach effect. Those latter 2 options aren't cheap either.
