I had an engine that had a bad intake valve seat which resulted in 0 PSI on one cyl.
This also messed up the vacuum too since the thing was pushing air back to the intake.
Like you I was chasing all sorts of problems, but once I ran the compression test and found the dead cyl I finally found the problem.
Run your test and see what you come up with. You want to see at least 150 psi (don't quote me on that number. I am guessing based on other engines)
