It helps (somewhat) that insulin needles are a small gauge.
Actually, I once gave myself an injection when there was no one else around to do it. I woke up one morning with gouty inflammation of an ankle tendon. It was so painful I couldn't put any weight on the foot. I was literally hopping around on the other foot to get around. It was a Sunday, but I knew there was no way I could manage at work in the upcoming days if I was still like that. And Mrs. Noah was out of town. So I drew up a cortisone injection and injected my own ankle (with a 25-gauge needle). Pain went away within a couple hours and I was good to go. Where there's a Will, there's a way.
