Ignition timing makes a big difference, and creates an iterative cycle where you will find yourself going back and forth between the fuel map and ignition map ad infinitum. Enjoy!
You might try retarding the timing a few degrees where you are getting the surging. I like to make big-ish changes to detect if that is the problem area, then refine it when I have pinpointed the area and direction of the change. So maybe retard the ignition map 5 degrees in the problem area and if the surging goes away, add back in 2 or 3 degrees and see if things are still good.
