I also saw/heard this exact same account of the event on the local news which contained part of a press conference held by the CHP. The report also mentioned that, before drawing his weapon, the officer identified himself as a LEO and displayed a nightstick. This apparently had little effect on the 'protestors', and only then did the officer un-holster his gun.
The SF area is notorious for destructive 'protests' of this kind and they draw participants from far & wide who are looking to get in on the action. Local athorities are well aware that these mobs are being stirred up by 'professional agitators' who's sole aim is to create as much mayhem and destruction as possible. Most of these people were probably not even aware of what this demonstration was originally intended for. This was an ugly scene, and I don't think that the officer's conduct in that very tense moment should be called into question.
