I've bought two bikes off Ebay... both transactions were flawless. I think a lot depends on what you are buying. KTM 250 EXC: included a ton of high res photos (I've found that the better the photos, the better the chances). Honda XR650L: again, lots of photos online. (Neither of these bikes attract thrashers an neither were ever raced, much less saw dirt). My current bike, a BMW XMoto was bought off CL and it included lots of well lit photos. Definitely have a conversation before you pull the trigger... you might meet some interesting people. The guy I bought the Xmoto from was an x-road racer who spent a lot of time at Road America. The guy I sold my R1100s also was a road racer who spent an hour telling me about racing Harleys at Daytona...
