If you figure a nice SC is worth $20k, that is a good starting point.
Take it to an EXPERIENCED PORSCHE mechanic for an inspection.
Make a list of everything it needs. Subtract those items from the $20K. If the seller balks, walk.
I can almost guarantee that if the lower head studs have not already been replaced, you will find broken ones when you remove the lower valve covers. You can then subtract $10K from the asking price. If you can do the work yourself AND the motor hasn't been abused you will be ahead of the game.
Additionally if there is ANY rust present in the body, I would get an estimate for repairs from someone who has experience restoring 911s. A respray on one of these cars can cost $5k or more.
