surprisingly, there isn't a lot to choose from out there, and it gets even more complicated when you find that there are 2.5mm and 3.5mm connectors, which means you may have to use an adaptor.
microphones have various pattern shapes. for something like this, first you have to start with a hypercardioid mic. it's more directional than an omni, a piezo, or a cardioid. then, you can start messing with the assembly, and convert it to a shotgun mic, which is even more directional. i'm working on the vent slit size and spacing now, for a sleeve that will slide over the mic, and tighten up the pattern.
note: the cable length really is not an issue, as long as it's less than 12 ft or so.

I think i have about 10' of cable but the pattern dispersion you're talking about is exactly my problem.
Is there an off the shelf mic in the format you're talking about that does 75% + of a perfect job in the position I have it mounted? Any picture of what you have/where you mounted it?
