Goodbye, retirement. hello new mid-life career.
So much for being a lazy bum. Didn't want to really do anything until after the summer, but couldn't turn down the job offer. Decided to take on a new field after playing with electricity for the past 30 yrs.
Got hired as a forensic death investigator for one of the county medical examiners offices in this fine state. Been training on the job for the past month or so. Had a ton of info tossed at me in a short time period, but so far handling it pretty well. The medical stuff and dealing with MDs and hospitals, is the toughest part so far, but getting easier with each case. The "gore" is the least of my worries. Dealing with the families of the deceased can be a challenge at times. I've dealt with plenty of deaths in the fire service over the years, but its a big difference handling them this intimately. Real heartbreaking being one on one with the family this closely, but its part of the job, and you just have to try and stay disconnected. Only part of the job I really despise, is the paperwork involved. Nothing I hate more than being stuck at a desk for more than 10 minutes!
