The wine country, Napa and Calistoga is about an hour or so north east of San Francisco. It is worth the visit. I am not sure if the wine train is still running, but a meal is included. There are just a ton of stuff to do in and around the area, more going south, so you guys just have to decide and plan accordingly. Monterey going south on PCH to LA will take you a whole day. The interstate will take about 4-5 hours should you need to get back up north on time.
