My daughter (only child) is 11. We've saved a bit in a 529, and God willing, should be able to pay for her college.
But I have very much started to question the 'when and where' of her schooling. My wife is from India, and years ago we would get in fights because she suggested that our daughter could go to college in India. I found the idea outrageous. Now, it doesn't seem so bizarre. Perhaps not India, but we would certainly look at foreign options.
We have already ruled out private colleges. As far as we're concerned, they're a rip off. Our daughters tutor is graduating with a 4.0 from HS. Got into a number of private colleges, but is going to OSU honors college. She thought the idea of racking up $200,000 in debt at a private college was 'dumb'.
Sorry, I don't buy the argument that the social contacts at a private school are worth the expense.
