Installing the reservoir lines is a big pain. Yes, you can remove the rubber grommets from the MC. However, if my memory is still working, it is more difficult to install the lines with the grommets out.
Try leaving the grommets in place and using some silcone spray. When pushing the lines in place, you should be able to feel the lines seat.
Now another trick that requires more work is to remove the gas tank; then remove the reservoir lines. Install the lines into the MC before installing the MC. Feed the lines through the bottom & connect the top end of the lines to the reservoir.
